Paki-iti Suftex – NZ's Largest Supplier of Blackface Terminal Rams
"The Suftex as a terminal sire option offers increased meat yields enabling progeny to be drafted at lower finished weights. They also add another option as a very tough terminal sire."
The Paki-iti Suftex points of difference are:
- Bred for dark colour from a large stabilised ewe flock
- Exceptional foot structure
- All terminal ram hoggets wintered on the hills at Paki-iti – testing constitution
- 100% SIL performance recorded
- DNA testing for Meat Quality
- Member of Premier Suftex giving us access to a wider gene pool.
In 2007, the Paki-iti Suffolk was used as a base for the Suftex breeding flock. This has now been stabilised with the use of Paki-iti Suftex sires and with our involvement with the Premier Suftex Group (a group of breeders throughout New Zealand) further bloodlines have been added. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Suftex rams, we have continued to increase the number of ewes in this flock.
These sheep are a combination of Meat from the Texel and Growth from the Suffolk. We have been very impressed with their toughness and ability to handle the Paki-iti hill country wintering policy.

Anna and Brian Coogan, Taihape – Winner of the National Ewe Hogget Competition 2019
The Coogan’s won the National Ewe Hogget Competition with their Romneys and also won the Flock Performance award. Paki-iti’s involvement has been to supply Suftex rams to this 330ha property where 50% of the 1700 ewes are mated to a terminal sire. Last year 91% of the Coogans’ lambs were killed prime off dams, averaging a kill weight of 19.7kg. Besides their growth, Brian is impressed with the longevity of the Suftex rams and the level of identification in the offspring. |
